Last weekend I went to the 9th annual Famous Fictional: Friends and Foes exhibit at the Mad Art Gallery and Event Space in Soulard.
This is one of my favorite shows each year. The premise of the show is this: two characters from fiction will be presented, on friend, and one foe. From these two characters, you must interpret who the protagonist is.
Friends and Foes
This year we had:
- The Seven Dwarves and The Evil Queen (Snow White)
- Scully and the Smoking Man (Fox Mulder)
- Mihouse and Sideshow Bob (Bart Simpson)
and you start to get the picture. The artists can use whatever medium suits them best, so we saw photography, printmaking, sketching, and even quilting. The show was well attended, and it was decent enough weather to make good use of the patio adjoining the show space.
If you’ve never been to Mad Art before, it’s definitely something you should see. Retaining the original art deco detailing of the building (formerly a police sub station) the building also retained its jail cells, which are used during events for dining/gathering spaces. It also has a perfectly lovely ladies room, which is always a plus.
Check out my video of the event below – we speak to Mad Art Gallery Director Carrie Becker, and artists Dan Zettwoch and Dave Moore. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite representation was!
